This fall the South Pasadena Public Library has a number of completely free programs for children planned. Among these programs are, Barks and Books, the In-n-Out Burger Cover to Cover Reading program, Storytimes, Lego Mania, and the Tween Art Appreciation Series. All programs are designed to help foster a love of reading in children of all ages.
During the period 12, Sept. to 18 Nov. the library will offer a number of age-appropriate storytimes. During Family Storytimes librarians will be sharing stories with the children of all ages including crafts, finger plays, and of course music on Tuesdays at 7:15 pm. There will also be Preschool Storytimes for those aged 3 to 5 on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. Toddler Storytime for 1 and 2-year-olds will be on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. and then for 2 and 3-year-olds of Fridays at 11:00 a.m.
The Barks and Books program will run the 2nd Monday of September, November, and December and run from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The program will be held in the Children’s Room and gives kids ages 5 to 10 a chance to come to the library and read a number of animal related stories to Katie. Katie is a dog who comes to the library from the Pasadena Humane Society Companion Animal Program. Not only does this make reading fun for the children, it helps to build their confidence in reading aloud. You must register for this program; sign-up forms are available here. The program also teaches children to treat animals with kindness and respect.
This program runs from the 1st of October until the 12th of November. During this time, children who participate and either read 5 books or have 5 books read to them can come to the Children’s Room at the South Pasadena Public Library and receive a special Achievement Award Certificate. This certificate can be taken to any In-n-Out Burger restaurant where it can be redeemed for a free hamburger or cheeseburger. The program is for 4 to 12-year old children, sign ups start on October 1st in the Children’s Room.
Who doesn’t love building things with Lego? On Saturday the 17th of December, the library will once again be hosting their annual Lego Mania event starting at 11:00 a.m. in the South Pasadena Public Library Community Room. Children of all ages and their families are welcome to come and enjoy this free event where they can combine their imaginations and use math, science, and engineering skills to create amazing projects from Lego blocks. Even those 3 and under can participate using the larger Duplo building blocks.
This series will be held on Friday, October 7th, 14th, and 21st running from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Community Room. The program is designed to let children ages 10 to 15 explore art under the guidance of a number of mentors from the Huntington Library and Gardens, SPACE, and the Norton Science Museum. This is a hands-on experience that lets children investigate art in a number of different ways.
