One of the biggest problems with living in most Pasadena neighborhoods is that there is so little in the way of privacy. You walk out into your backyard to fire up the grille and your neighbors ask you what you are having. There is nothing worse than being ogled by your neighbors when hitting the pool or hot tub and nowhere to go for a little outdoor private time. Fortunately, there are a number of affordable ways to add privacy to your backyard that are relatively inexpensive and can be very attractive at the same time.
Bamboo is not only a relatively inexpensive plant to buy, but it also grows rapidly. Certain varieties can reach anywhere from 10 to 30 feet in height. You can even buy bamboo this tall to replant in your yard for instant privacy. Just make sure you choose the best variety for the Southern California climate and that you keep it from spreading into your neighbor’s yards.
Trellis fences typically look like a lattice made from thin strips of wood that are woven together. Privacy is created when you add plants that grow down from the top in planters or plants that grow up from the ground. Over the course of time plants such as honeysuckle will fill in all of the gaps and create a beautiful living privacy fence between you and your nosey neighbors.
While trellises are made with large openings intended to be filled with vines or plants for privacy, lattice screens are made using strips of wood woven with much smaller gaps between them. You can still cover them with plants and vines, but in most cases, the small size of the gaps offer more than enough privacy for most occasions.
Often referred to as sun sails these are a large sheet of nylon or a similar material that come in a variety of colors and shapes. Some come with hardware that lets you hang them from trees, fence posts, the side of your house, and more. Others come complete with their own portable frames that let you move them anywhere in your yard to create the privacy you want.
Laser cut privacy screens offer a number of advantages, although they can be a little on the expensive side. These are similar to the privacy screens many people already use for decorative purposes inside their homes. They are free-standing and come in a range of sizes. The one thing to keep in mind with privacy screens is that they do not stand up well in moderate to high winds.
As you can see it is not that hard to create a little privacy in your backyard, even in the crowded residential neighborhoods of Pasadena. All it really takes is a little creativity and effort and you will soon be keeping your nosy neighbors at bay.
